Southern Tier Life Celebrates Pride, Freedom and Fun in June

As you may have noticed, Southern Tier Life looks a little different this month. Since June is Pride Month, we have the opportunity to hear from members of the LGBTQIA+ community about their experiences and the importance of being acknowledged for who they are.

In addition to the fun logo change we made for the month, Bath poet Kidd Williams will share her journey of self-discovery, and how poetry and writing helped with her self-realization.

SUNY Corning Community College Professor Hannah Jones also contributed a column for Southern Tier Voices, that explains the importance of using a person’s correct pronouns and some thoughts on how to handle uncomfortable social situations related to LGBTQIA+ and gender identity.

Southern Tier Life caught up with ExPats fashion expert Jordan Brooks, who’s been making moves in Hollywood while continuing to nurture those in the Southern Tier interested in working in the fashion industry. He’ll also be starting a new venture in July that will showcase his fashion and pop culture savvy.

Shout-out to artist Jill Vera, whose KnotSimplyLove yarn art is featured on the website with some of this month’s contributions. Her work is unique and makes me smile. The featured pieces hang on my walls so I get a little color to brighten my world every day. You can find her work at the link above or on Instagram at @knotsimplylove.

We continue celebrating area entrepreneurs with the Minding Your Business feature, which kicked off the month with a look at one of the coolest spots in the Southern Tier, The Great Escape Ice Cream Parlor. Yum!

Local humorist, nature enthusiast and Chemung River expert Jim Pfiffer, gave us a little extra this month with an informative and insightful Southern Tier Voices column about the 1972 Flood that devastated the region, and still affects the psyche of some communities in the Southern Tier.

As we leap into summer, social events are heating up! Everyone’s ready to party, especially since Covid has wreaked havoc on social gatherings for the past two years! Be sure to visit our Events page often, as it’s updated frequently with lots of fun, exciting, relaxing and educational community events and activities.

Finally, I wanted to sincerely thank our advertisers, Swan Morss Insurance, who’s been providing insurance, financial and real estate services in the Southern Tier since 2016; and Card Carrying Books & Gifts, celebrating five years in business this year! Your support of the community and Southern Tier Life is appreciated.

There are plenty of surprises left this month so, keep checking back in!
